After they had hoisted it up, they used cables to help reinforce the ship. Fearing that they would run aground on the Syrtis sand bars, they lowered the sea anchor, and so were driven along.

(17) Picking it up they used supports in preparing the boat and feared they might fall down into the *Syrtis. They lowered the vessels (boat gear) in this way to be carried.

[17] After hoisting it aboard, the crew took desperate measures, passing ropes under the ship to hold it together. Fearing they would run aground on the sandbars of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and let the ship be driven along.
