I thought it necessary therefore to entreat the brothers that they would go before to you, and arrange ahead of time the generous gift that you promised before, that the same might be ready as a matter of generosity, and not of greediness.

(5) So then I was lead that it's necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange beforehand this generous gift you vowed previously that this is ready? In this way, as a blessing and not as by greediness.

[5] That's why I felt it necessary to encourage these brothers to visit you ahead of time and help you prepare the generous gift you previously promised. This way, your gift will be ready as a true expression of generosity, not something grudgingly squeezed out under pressure.

Necessary, therefore, I thought it to exhort the brethren, that they may go before to you, and may make up before your formerly announced blessing, that this be ready, as a blessing, and not as covetousness.
